Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired two times late to take a shock lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing shootout victory.

The record champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
